Australia's Astra Sharma recorded her first career WTA title with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 upset of top-seeded Ons Jabeur in Sunday's title match of the MUSC Health Women's Open at Charleston, S.C.
Sharma, ranked 165th in the world, made an impressive recovery from her opening-set loss to Jabeur of Tunisia. She fought to win the second set and then dominated the third, winning the final four games to earn the crown.
Sharma won 61.5 percent of her return points in the final set of a match that took one hour and 55 minutes. Jabuer's percentage in the third set was 31.6.
The 25-year Sharma was a college star at Vanderbilt who is now trying to find her way on the WTA Tour. The SEC Player of the Year in 2017 had a high singles ranking of No. 85 in June of 2019.
Sharma's ranking will rise to No. 120 with Sunday's victory.
