Huge casualties in blaze that ripped through Banglesh capital

DHAKA, Bangladesh - Scores of people have died tragically in a fire that has ripped through apartment buildings, a restaurant and warehouses in the historic area of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

The fire began around 11:40pm on Wednesday night in the city's Chawkbazar area, a district in old Dhaka, after what was belived to be a fuel cylinder exploded in a car.

The inferno tore through a number of buildings and a restaurant and was so intense it lasted through the night.

Many of the diners in the restaurant were among the dead.

Officials on Thursday said the death toll so far had reached seventy eight, with another 40 people injured.

CNN reported that two of the buildings were so badly damaged in the fire they wre in danger of collapsing.

It was the second major fire in the country in four days. A fire destroyed more than 200 slum houses in the Bangladeshi port of Chittagong on Sunday, killing at least 8 people and injuring more than fifty, police and firefighters said.
