New Zealand has posted its lowest annual goods trade deficit for nearly seven years.

In the 12 months to October the deficit came to NZ$1.2 billion, the lowest annual figure since November 2002.

Import values have fallen by 19 per cent or more year-on-year for each of the last seven months, with the declining trend for imports being the longest since trade import statistics were first recorded in 1988.

The value of exports in October was NZ$3 billion, down 22.4 per cent from a year earlier.

Dairy exports showed the biggest decline.
