Israel's navy has intercepted a ship carrying more than 500 tons of weapons from Iran.

Israel has alleged the weapons were bound for Syria and eventually Hezbollah in Lebanon.

For some time Israel's security forces have suggested Hezbollah may be be rearming for future conflict in Lebanon.

The ship was stopped late Tuesday evening, during a routine Israeli patrol of international waters.

Israeli soldiers were given permission by the captain of the vessel to board the German-owned ship, where they found 300 Iran Shipping Lines containers, en-route to Syria.

Inspection of some of the containers ammunition crates hidden amid sacks of industrial materials.

The ship with its crew was then taken back to an Israeli port, where the captain and crew were deemed not to have been knowingly involved with the shipment.

Syria has now been accused by the Israeli government of serving as an intermediary for the arms shipments.
