Indian politician calls for more responsibility from Tata
Australian News.Net Sunday 24th August, 2008
The head of the opposition party in the Indian state of West Bengal has called for an indefinite siege of the Tata factory.
Mamata Banerjee's call came after Tata, one of India's biggest firms, threatened to halt production of the world's cheapest car, the Nano.
Tata had planned to launch the Nano at about US$2,500 later this year, but Tata's owner, Ratan Tata, threatened to move the plant from Singur if agitation over a land issue continued.
Mamata Banerjee, leader of the Trinamool Congress party, wants 160 hectares of land returned to local farmers after it had been granted to Tata by the government.
As the uncertainty over the plant continues, a number of other states in India have come forward and said they are more than happy to build the Nano.
