Haditha case could be re-tried in US court
Australian News.Net Thursday 19th June, 2008
Prosecutors in the US have begun an argument to the appeals court to reinstate the case against Colonel Jeffrey Chessani, who was charged over the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians at Haditha.
A military judge dismissed all charges
Chessani, a 44-year-old top-ranking US Marine, was originally charged with violating a lawful order and dereliction of duty.
The case will be heard by the Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeal in Washington, which will have no set timeline for issuing its ruling.
The shootings at Haditha in Iraq, have been portrayed by Iraqi witnesses as a massacre of unarmed civilians.
