Tibet government-in-exile slams China on jail sentences

Australian News.Net
Friday 2nd May, 2008

The Tibetan government-in-exile has lashed a Chinese court's sentence on 30 Tibetans involved in anti-China protests last month.

The penalty imposed on the Tibetans ranged from three years to life imprisonment.

The Tibetan-government-in-exile from its base in India has said the verdicts were disproportionate, the trials were not fair or transparent and the accused were even denied independent lawyers.

An exiled government spokesman said: 'We fear that many such arbitrary trials will follow to lock up all those Tibetans presently under detention.'

'We urge the Chinese government to do away with this pretence of a fair trial and release at once all detained Tibetans.'

Anti-China protests broke out in Tibet March 10th and according to the Tibetan government-in-exile, at least 203 Tibetans were killed.
