Rice Institute asks for more world support
Australian News.Net Saturday 12th April, 2008
The International Rice Research Institute has asked the international community to begin donating to alleviate the rice crisis in Asia and elsewhere.
The Institute met in the Philippines during the week to look at key issues seen as vital to increasing rice production in Asia.
Increased production is needed to ease the sharp rise in rice prices that has swept across the region.
The IRRI decided it would need the support of donors and policymakers as well as better awareness among the media and general public of the problems in the rice market.
It considered reducing existing yield gaps in Asian production, the delivery of new post-harvest technologies, the introduction of higher yielding rice varieties and research into hardier rice varieties.
